A New Zealand company has developed a new anti-inflammatory pain relief medication, combining the pain relieving properties of both Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, that’s nearly a third more effective than Paracetamol alone following oral surgery.1

Hartley Atkinson, founder and owner of AFT Pharmaceuticals, says his company developed Maxigesic® while trying to find an alternative to other combination painkiller products.

“Those products often use Paracetamol or Ibuprofen as the basic active ingredient, but then add codeine to amplify the effect. However, codeine is an opiate, and there has been concern over its potential for mis-use.”2

Why Maxigesic"?

In a world first, Maxigesic® takes two active ingredients, Paracetamol 500mg and Ibuprofen 150mg, and combines them in a specific formulation – without codeine. Both Paracetamol and Ibuprofen are tried and trusted ingredients, and together they work in different, complementary ways to reduce pain and inflammation. This means Maxigesic® can be used for a wide range of pain.

Maxigesic® was formulated and patented by New Zealander Hartley Atkinson who, together with local experts, tested it in a New Zealand clinical trial on post-operative pain relief after removal of 1-4 wisdom teeth.1 They found Maxigesic® gives significantly more effective pain relief than either Paracetamol alone1 or Ibuprofen alone.1

Double action pain relief

To determine the effectiveness of Maxigesic®, the New Zealand researchers conducted a clinical trial3 in 135 patients who were having their wisdom teeth removed.

The trial compared Paracetamol 4000mg, Ibuprofen 1200mg, and Maxigesic®, in four divided daily doses, monitoring the patients for 48 hours after surgery.

The results1 clearly showed Maxigesic’s® combination of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen works together in synergy to produce better pain relief than either ingredient individually for this type of pain.

“We found in the study that Maxigesic® gives 32.3% more pain relief than Paracetamol alone following oral surgery1,” says Hartley Atkinson. “The Maxigesic® patients also enjoyed 35.8% more pain relief than Ibuprofen alone.*
